I Need to Know: Does Toothpaste Get Rid of Pimples?

There are a lot of cures for acne in the world. Many are expensive and some are dirt cheap. That being said, does toothpaste get rid of pimples? We’ve all heard the rumors. Toothpaste fighting off pimples? Can it be true? We all wait patiently for the answer…

The answer is yes, no, and unclear.

Yes because there are many cases where people say adding a dab of toothpaste to the designated pimple before going to bed got rid of it. There is some truth to this I’ve found. Toothpaste contains chemicals that dry out the skin. If applied to an area that’s inflamed, such as a pimple, it can dry it out and reduce the swelling. The gels don’t have the same effect – only the pastes.

No, however happens when a person’s skin rejects the toothpaste. Not all people have the same skin and so everyone might have a different reaction. There have been reported cases of people developing even more irritation after trying the toothpaste method. Perhaps their skin was very sensitive, or just did not bode well with toothpaste on it. Whichever the case, the toothpaste failed for those persons.

And, toothpaste getting rid of pimples remains unclear because the answer is still both yes and no at the same time. No scientific research has been done that can determine that toothpaste is a cure for acne. And no research has been done to prove it can’t.

Personally I believe that toothpaste will only work on cases that are not severe. For instance, placing a dab on a few pimples here and there seems like it would dry them out and work no problem. However, if your entire forehead is covered, perhaps toothpaste won’t be powerful enough and might contribute to the inflammation by drying out the rest of skin.

For these cases there are many other methods of removing acne. There are lotions that aren’t toothpastes, and pills that are extremely effective. In fact there one type of medicine that has a fantastically high success rate, unfortunately it comes with it drawbacks: severe side effects.

Mostly, however, these side effects reside in women that are pregnant, or that are going to be pregnant. If you’re neither, then you’re in the clear. However, if your acne is severe then there’s no reason to try toothpaste and it’s a good idea to just visit the doctor instead.

Overall I think everyone can agree that the question: does toothpaste get rid of pimples, will have an unknown answer until some sound research can be done. Until that time I’m going to apply only small dabs to small pimples on my face, nothing special, and I’ll keep getting mixed results.
