The Greatest Debate: Can Chocolate Cause Acne
enturies have passed since humans have begun thinking on a cognitive level. And in each of those centuries great philosophers propose the question: Can chocolate cause acne?
Perhaps, this question really wasn’t a concern until recently, but still, people ask the question.
For years my parents would tell me different things would give me acne. So naturally, every once in a while when I did have a breakout, my parents would point at something I had recently ate or ate too much of. For instance if I had a lot of pop one week, then my acne was clearly the result of that, or maybe I had too much candy (chocolate included) and my acne was directed the result of that. After a while, and a little bit of aging, the reasons just didn’t seem to make any sense. Can chocolate cause acne? I suppose without knowledge anyone could assume such a thing.

What Does Cause Acne?
To be basic, acne develops when oil in your skin wants to breach the surface but cannot. The area will become inflamed and acne is the result. A whitehead occurs when the oil has come to the surface. A blackhead is the same except oxidized.
Does Chocolate Play A Major Role?
Frankly, no chocolate plays really no role at all. This doesn’t mean to go out and eat all the chocolate you can.
Realistically, a poor diet might increase the odds of having acne. Why? Because having a unhealthy diet can lead to unhealthy levels of certain hormones which activate the oil glands. The over activity, as you guessed, would result in more acne.
What Are Some Real Causes of Acne?
Hormonal activity is a huge factor in acne, which is why you’ll see teens with acne during puberty. Moreover, your teenage years are when all these oil glands become fully active, so naturally teens have greater chances of acne than anyone else.Acne has links to heredity, but isn’t necessarily a primary cause. If your parents, their parents, and your parent’s parent’s parents had acne, you might too. However, that’s not always the case. It’s best looked at as a “good chance” kind of thing – there’s a good chance you’ll have acne too. After knowing these tidbits of info and asking again: can chocolate cause acne? I’d have to respond with a vehement no. The reasons why I say no are clear, just as the reasons why acne is caused. There’s no real fact behind chocolate causing acne, and I have to believe it’s a myth perpetuated by parents to keep order on their children.
After all, what better way to get your teen to listen than to let him know he’ll have acne if he doesn’t?
